Riddle: What belongs to you but others use it more than you do?

Answer:

NAME

Explanation:

This Riddle is a bit misleading, and Riddle Robot Eyezak knows that. It employs a very common riddle tactic called misdirection, but it does so in a pretty sneaky way. Once you realize that it tries to misdirect you, you can start thinking more broadly, and arrive at the answer quite easily.

The misdirect is a little hidden here. Through the words that are used in the question, “what belongs to you,” most people start thinking about material items. Perhaps these are things you have purchased. Maybe they were your last Christmas or Birthday gift. The problem is, that the thing the riddle is actually talking about, is something that is not physical.

So, brushing aside the idea that the answer might be something physical you own (and more realistically, it is probably not something physical at all, knowing there is a misdirect. riddles try to be tricky that way), you can start thinking about the non-physical things that belong to you in some since. Let us list off some examples of this below:

  • your thoughts
  • your feelings
  • your dreams
  • your friendships
  • your name
  • your insta account
  • your email account
  • really any digital identity

Okay so now we are on to something. Your list may be longer than mine, but you can see when you stop thinking about the physical things, you can see there is quite a long list of non-physical things that belong to you. To help us slim down the list of possible answers, let us take this short list and break it into two shorter lists: things other people use, and things they do not use.

Things they DO NOT use:

  • your thoughts – these are in your head
  • your dreams – most people keep these to themselves
  • your insta account – they CAN use this, but most people would not share access to this, because it is your reputation
  • your email account – same as your insta account
  • any digital identity – same as your insta account

Things they use:

  • your feelings (they can use them against you)
  • your friendships (they can use this as leverage)
  • your name (they call you this)

After we break our long list into two smaller lists like this, hopefully you will have a much shorter list of non-physical things that belong to you which other people might use. With this much smaller list, we could probably take a ‘brute force’ approach from here. My list is only 3 items long, so answering this riddle now should be pretty easy.

Your Feelings:

Yes people can manipulate you with this semi-public information. They might even do so often. But, guess what, so do you. You most certainly use your own feelings more than other people do. Feelings are the core of most humans, and they guide and mark every action and decision we make. Every moment of every day, quite literally, each of us use our emotions. Because of this, it is probably not the answer to this riddle.

Your Friendships:

People can also use your friends. They may need their alternator changed, and you have a mechanic friend. Or they may need advice about their relationship and you might have a friend who is a marriage counselor. You may have a friend that is an employer and someone may ask you to ask your friend for a job. But, again, you use your friends more often by far. You hang out with your friends. You ask your friends for advice. You give your friends advice. You relate to them on a regular basis. This is probably not the answer to the riddle either.

Your Name:

People use your name most of the time that they talk to you or about you. Your name is how other people identify you in their communications. Humans have a nasty habit of needing to know what to call something in order to effectively communicate about it, and your name is what was assigned to you for that purpose.

On the flip side, you rarely use your name. You used it to sign papers, or apply for accounts, or label your work. But those instances are rare in comparison to daily conversations conducted by other people about you. Because other people use it more than you, this is the most likely answer, from my list, that would be the answer to the riddle.

Conclusion:

So now we have the answer to our Riddle. All we had to do was out smart the Riddle Robot Eyezak by thinking laterally about the possible answers. Hopefully it is clear how we arrived at this answer, both in the reason that the answer is true, but also in the methodology we used to arrive at the answer. It is our hope that we can not only give you the answers to these riddles, but also teach you the tools that you can use to solve other riddles.

Background:

A Riddle about your name and people using it

Even though the Riddle Robot Eyezak does not really care about the background of the answers of his riddles, as humans, it is still fun and educational to understand a little more about it. As such, lets talk about names: where they come from and their purpose.

Names are used to identify things. This can be a classification for a group of things or an individual thing. The thing that is being named is called the referent (another name, LOL). Names are not exclusive to people though. They are given to each person, place or thing that humans know about. This can be the name a parent gives a child, or an owner gives to a building, or even a philosopher gives to a thought process.

This Riddle that Riddle Robot Eyezak poses is specifically about your personal name though. Typically this is given to you by your parents or the guardian responsible for you as a child, though not always. Personal names are used to try and uniquely identify you and distinguish you from other humans; however, because there are so many of us, when it comes to uniquely identifying someone based on name alone, answers of uniqueness are rarely achieved in this manner.
